Charity Home Lotteries With the Best Odds of Winning in 2021

charity home lotteries with the best odds

Have you ever thought about your dream home? Perhaps you’ve fantasized about owning a modern condo in Vancouver or a cozy cottage by the water in Muskoka? Unfortunately, buying their dream home isn’t an option for many Canadians, but owning one isn’t entirely out of the question. There are dozens of home lotteries across Canada offering a dream house or condo as the grand prize. These draws usually benefit a local charity and give lucky winners luxurious condos, houses, and cottages.

Charity lotteries are popular because the odds are better than the average mega-lottery. While mega-draws like Lotto 6/49 have astronomical odds of winning (currently 1 in 28.6 million), most giveaways have dozens of extra secondary prizes, which brings the odds of winning a prize to around 1 in 30.

Charity Home Lotteries with the Best Odds Across Canada

If you’re looking for a charity lottery with excellent odds of winning, and you aren’t concerned about where the property is located in Canada, we’ve listed the home lotteries across Canada with the best odds.

How We Found the Charity Lotteries with the Best Odds

To help determine what lottery has the best odds, we examined each lottery based on the total number of tickets available for sale and the total number of prizes available to be won in the main prize draws. Based on this, we calculated the “odds of winning” for each charity (except for Alberta’s Full House Lottery, which currently does not publish the number of tickets available for sale).

We recognize that this is a rudimentary calculation; it’s meant only to help you assess your theoretical odds. Your actual odds of winning will depend on how many tickets are sold, whether or not tickets are re-entered into subsequent draws (thereby reducing your chances of winning), among other factors.

Still, it’s nice to know that when trying to narrow down where to spend that hard-earned $25 or $100, you can narrow down your best chances of potentially winning a dream home.

Top 16 Charity Lotteries with the Best Donation Percentages

Mega-lotteries have been criticized for tacking on loads of lower-valued prizes just to boost the probability of winning — the idea being that winning something, and supporting a good cause, will prompt ticket buyers to fork out the $25 to $100 per ticket cost.

If donating to a good cause is a concern and you’d rather buy tickets to a charity lottery, consider the research. Charity Intelligence, a Toronto-based organization, crunches data and financials to help donors determine where their dollars can have the most impact.

For example, they analyzed 30 of the largest charities in Canada, but not all of them offered homes or properties as a prize. Of those that did provide real estate as a grand prize, here were the top 16 that spent more of the lottery proceeds on donations to their chosen charity beneficiaries than on prizes or operational costs.
