7 Interior Design Mistakes to Avoid in the Bedroom

Boho bedroom design

When you walk into a home, what is the first thing that stands out? From the lighting to the accessories, the bedroom is one of the most rooms in the house regarding interior design. However, things can always go wrong when designing the bedroom. While there are many pitfalls to consider in interior designing, we’ve compiled a list of seven home design mistakes to avoid in the bedroom.

1. It’s Key to Choose the Right Rug

Ditch these interior design mistakes

“Having a rug in the bedroom may not be as important as the bed or anything else in the room,” says Chloe Gandon, a design writer at Boomessays and Lia Help

“However, a rug can help tie the room together. Just keep in mind that rug size matters in this case. If you want your rug to be big, then go for it. Go for a rug that’s larger than the bed. The idea behind this is that when you wake up in the morning, your feet will meet a comfy rug.”

2. Colour Schemes Need to Be on Point

Colour is another crucial thing to consider in the bedroom — and is also a common interior design mistake. The last thing you want is for the colour schemes to be off. Specific colours can pair well together, while other colours can clash with each other.

Consider going with colours that are relaxing and comforting. If you want, you can opt for neutral shades since they make you feel calm, especially at night time when you want to sleep. But, speaking of colours…

3. Avoid Overly Bright Colours

You may want to avoid bright colours in the bedroom. This is because bright colours can interfere with sleeping. On the other hand, dark colours compliment the nighttime, allowing you to get better sleep.

While that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t experiment with colours, it’s still important to pick colours that aren’t as bright. With that said, avoid the following colours: reds, yellows, and purples. Instead, opt for pale hues, including blue, green and grey.

4. Don’t Forget About Storage

Speaking of interior design mistakes, having storage in the bedroom is also vital. While bedrooms are all about sleeping, you should still think about storing things like clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. You don’t want the room to be cluttered.

Consider having a nightstand where you can hold things like chargers, books, etc. Also, think about your closet space, where you can place clothes, shoes, hangers, and other things.

5. Install Good Window Treatments

Now, for the bedroom windows, you can’t leave them bare. Plus, you don’t want your curtains to be on the wrong side. For the curtains, try to avoid too short of a length. You may want to opt for curtain hems that touch the floor.

Plus, make sure that the curtains are functional enough to be adjusted when necessary. Finally, you can get creative with the fabrics and trims to add personality to the room.

6. Don’t Over Furnish and Clutter

As mentioned before, the room shouldn’t be cluttered. That’s why it’s essential to have plenty of space in the room. Remember, the bedroom is about giving yourself a retreat, not a gathering place. We can leave that job to the living room.

With that said, make sure you don’t go overboard. There should be plenty of room for you to go from the door to the bed at nighttime.

7. Go All-in on Lighting

“Lighting is key to having a great bedroom design,” says Elizabeth Rosenthal, a lifestyle blogger at State of writing and Essayroo

“Lighting has to be looked at in two ways — natural lighting for during the day, and then a sufficient light for nighttime. Try to avoid bare bulbs on the ceiling fan and chandeliers because they clash with the rest of the room. If you shop for a bedside lamp, don’t buy two different styles that have different dimensions. Lighting is essential to have in the room just as long as you make it not just stylish, but also functional.”

As you can see, a lot can go wrong when thinking about interior design for the bedroom. By taking the time to avoid these seven mistakes, your bedroom will look fantastic, and it won’t clash in any way. Add personality to the room, and be sure to make it functional. Remember, style and function can go hand-in-hand when done right.
