If there’s one consolation as shorter evenings give way to crisp autumn mornings, it’s that fall harvest season has arrived.

Pumpkin picking season is here — and Canadians love their pumpkins.

According to Statistics Canada, an estimated 80,172 metric tonnes of pumpkins were harvested in 2016.

For those who don’t gorge on gourds, there are a number of other fruits, vegetables and legumes ready to be plucked from the harvest.

“The cool thing about going to a farm is that you can often find varieties that are not in grocery stores,” says Cathy Bartolic, the executive director the Ontario Farm Fresh Marketing Association.

Newer varieties, such as Silken apples, don’t yet have great enough yields for grocery stores, making farms the only place to buy them.

If picking produce isn’t your bag, Bartolic says many farms offer family-friendly activities on-site, such as wagon rides and corn mazes.

“It’s great just to get out in the fresh air, to catch those last few rays until winter kicks in.”
