Many of us imagine celebrities have a natural inclination towards stylish decor. We assume that glossy magazine spread that features lavish homes and flawless furnishings are all down to a man or woman who earns their living in the limelight. Not true. Not only do many celebs (and non-celebs) pay for expert advice from interior designers and personal style consultants, but not all decoration choices are stylish. Some celebs (and some designers) make strange, even outlandish decor choices.
Here are nine of the weirdest and most outrageous celebrity homes—homes that are a bit over-the-top when it comes to home furnishings, decor or accessories.
1. Kat Von D’s goth-style mansion
Forget one interesting item, Kat Von D owns an entire romantic gothic paradise in Los Angeles that is full of interesting items for her outrageous home. The home features coordinated velvet living room furniture and a matching moody, mysterious attitude. She even turned the fireplace into a large wax candle deposit—perfect for the Queen of Ink.
2. Lenny Kravitz’s pop art home
Lenny Kravitz is living inside a pop art explosion! Several rooms in his home are devoted to a single bright colour and the furniture and features of the home scream “New York” (where the pop art scene exploded in the 1950s and 1960s). It’s a home even pop art icons like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Claes Oldenburg would feel at home in.
3. Nicholas Cage built a mini-train inside his house
Look up near the arrow to see Nicholas Cage’s model train set that moves on a loop through the ceiling and perimeters of the entire house. The man is living right.
4. Celine Dion has a waterpark
Canadian pop icon and songstress Celine Dion has an unexpected addition to her outrageous celebrity home. In her backyard, there is a waterslide complete with multiple-slides, a pool and spray fountains. It’s a backyard pool that would rival just about any waterpark in North America.
5. Justin Theroux and his vintage anatomical sculptures
Justin Theroux, an American actor, screenwriter and most-recently, husband to Jennifer Aniston, is big on conversational pieces. As a result, Justin likes to collect vintage learning sculptures of mouths. I mean, I guess it gives people something to talk about (and talk with).
6. Demi Moore and her terrifying doll collection
Demi Moore has a collection of weirdly life-like cherubic dolls placed around her house as decor. Enough said.
7. Rod Stewart has a miniature replica of grand central station
Rod Stewart likes trains. I mean, he really, really likes trains. Which is why he has a replica of the 1940s New York Central Station in his home. Get this — the replica is just under 1500-square-feet in size — about the same as an average home!
8. Lady Gaga owns a ghost detector
In the category of “people most likely to own a ghost detector,” Lady Gaga comes out on top.
9. Stephan Spielberg owns the original Rosebud sled
The famous director has always paid his respects to cinema’s history. He went to the next level when he bought the original sled from the early cinematic classic Citizen Kane and the featuring prop of one of the most well-known movie endings of all time.
So, if you’ve ever wondered if your clown collection is a bit strange or whether the hand-me-down, hand-crafted dollhouse from your great-grandparents is a bit sentimental, just remember, these aren’t the craziest things homeowners keep. Some celebrities maintain far weirder homes and decor!
