Albertans love their homes. As of this year, homeowners in the prairie province more than doubled their spending on renovations from a decade ago, perhaps with inspiration from the Calgary Fall Home Show.

This renovation trend is due, in part, to the desire for that perfect home, but also because of the various catastrophes, provincial residents faced over the last few years. ATB Financial studied the home reno spending in Alberta and found that spikes in spending occurred at the end of 2013 and the start of 2014—a direct result of the June 2013 floods in southern Alberta. Another reason for the increased spending on home renovations is the economic recession that hit the province when oil prices collapsed a few years ago. Lai Sing Louie, regional economist for the Prairies and Territories with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., says the spike in renovation spending corresponds to a time when thousands of Albertans lost their jobs due to resource price drops. Instead of “moving up” into bigger, more expensive homes, Louie believes people opted to stay put and renovate.

Whatever the reason, a decision to remodel, redecorate or renovate starts with ideas. One of the best places to get inspiration, while talking directly to the experts, is at the Calgary Fall Home Show. Scheduled from September 21 to 24, 2017 at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park, this year’s Calgary Fall Home Show will offer homeowners a glimpse into what’s trending in Calgary real estate. There are over 350 exhibitors and features designed to whip any home into shape.

To help you get the most out of this year’s show, here are the top four up-and-coming trends to look out for during this year’s show:

No 1: Living design

Breathe new life into your space with inspiration from floral designer Cory Christopher. Part workshop, part boutique, and part creative studio, pop by for a consultation or take a terrarium planting workshop to flex your green thumb just in time for fall.

A regular on Citytv’s Breakfast Television, Cory and his team will walk you through the ins-and-outs of creating your own plant masterpiece using unique succulents, plants, and check out the latest from his fall harvest collection of wreaths, garlands, a living wall and fall accents all while helping you unearth your inner creative artist.

No 2: Green your laundry

No, it’s not the latest fad to dye your clothes green. Green cleaning products are becoming more and more popular, and that includes environmentally friendly and natural laundry products!

One of the sponsors of the 2017 Calgary Fall Home Show was Nellie’s All-Natural. Nellie’s specializes in environmentally conscious cleaning products, including natural laundry detergents, cleaning products, and dishwashing soaps.

These products are not only good for cleaning but are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Recent innovations have helped boost their cleaning power while not compromising their ability to clean thoroughly.

As a sponsor of this year’s show, Nellie’s is offering one lucky person a chance to win a year’s supply of products (valued at $2,000). Stop by Nellie’s All-Natural booth (#701) located in Hall C and enter to win.

No 4: Let in the white space (and make room for colour)

Are you afraid to start decluttering yet sick and tired of your current decor? You won’t want to miss two of this year’s main stage speakers. Helen Youn is Alberta’s first KonMari Method certified consultant. Through the revolutionary organizing style of KonMari, Youn helps you redefine not only your space but also your desires. Her approach is simple: Find the joy in all things. Do this and everything else becomes clutter that has no place in your life. For tips on how to revolutionize your space, check out on Helen Youn at this year’s Calgary Fall Home Show.

Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to add in a bit of colour. This is when you’ll need the guidance of designer Tiffany Pratt. Known for her bright hair colour and wild colour palettes, Pratt isn’t a stranger to the need for white space. At this year’s show, expect Pratt to discuss the need for transformation and how this translates into white colour space in home design and decor.

Tiffany Pratt will be returning to the Main Stage Friday, September 22 at 6 pm, Saturday, September 23 at 1 pm and Sunday, September 24 at noon. Helen Youn will be taking to the Urban Barn Main Stage on Friday, September 22 at 3 pm and Sunday, September 24 at 2 pm.
