Albertans love their homes. As of this year, homeowners in the prairie province more than doubled their spending on renovations from a decade ago, perhaps with inspiration from the Calgary Fall Home Show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This renovation trend is due, in part, to the desire for that perfect home, but also because of the various catastrophes, provincial residents faced over the last few years. ATB Financial studied the home reno spending in Alberta and found that spikes in spending occurred at the end of 2013 and the start of 2014\u2014a direct result of the June 2013 floods in southern Alberta. Another reason for the increased spending on home renovations is the economic recession that hit the province when oil prices collapsed a few years ago. Lai Sing Louie, regional economist for the Prairies and Territories with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., says the spike in renovation spending corresponds to a time when thousands of Albertans lost their jobs due to resource price drops. Instead of \u201cmoving up\u201d into bigger, more expensive homes, Louie believes people opted to stay put and renovate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever the reason, a decision to remodel, redecorate or renovate starts with ideas.
