Never assume that shutting off the light switch will protect you. Even with the light switch in the off position, electricity still flows to the light fixture, so shut it down at the breaker.

With the power off, remove the globe by unscrewing any retaining screws or nuts. Next, remove the light bulbs, unmount the fixture by removing the mounting screws, and carefully lower the fixture. If your step ladder is tall enough, you can rest the light on the top step, making the rest of the procedure much more manageable.

Step 2

Once you remove the old fixture from the ceiling, you will want to check the wires with the appropriate voltage tester (a non-contact voltage tester is highly recommended for safety). Move the tip of the non-contact tester near each wire. If the tester lights up, electricity is still running to the fixture. Next, recheck the breaker box to make sure you flipped the appropriate breaker. Once you are sure that no voltage is running to the light, remove the wire nuts that connect the two wires. If a bare wire runs to a screw in the electrical box, remove it and be careful not to lose the screw. Next, remove only the wire nuts for the wiring that leads to the light fixture.

Check your electrical mounting box to ensure it’s in decent shape, securely mounted, and can handle the weight of the new fixture. Also, make sure it has a crossbar for mounting the fixture. The kit should include one. Finally, consider consulting a professional and having them mount a new box properly if the old one is insufficient.

Step 3

Before installing the new light:

Check all the wires for fraying or damage.

Strip about 1.95 cm of insulation from each to expose the new wire. The wires you are dealing with should be black, white, and bare copper/or green for the ground.

Twist the exposed ends together to match black-to-black and white-to-white, then twist a wire nut on each.

Carefully tuck the wires back into the box.

If there is a bare ground wire in the box, twist the ground wire from the light. If not, secure the fixture’s ground wire to the grounding screw on the box.

Put a bulb in the socket and test the light to ensure everything works properly before continuing.

Step 4

Once everything is working correctly, turn the breaker off again before continuing to install the ceiling light to the ceiling. If the fixture has a stem, thread it into the crossbar on the electrical box, tighten the mounting nut, and then slide the canopy up to the ceiling to cover the box and wiring. Otherwise, secure the base of the lighting fixture with the mounting screws provided. The fixture typically comes with instructions explaining how to mount it based on its design.

Related content

Should You DIY or Hire a Professional?

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="<strong>when-to-consult-an-expert-for-help-on-how-to-install-a-ceiling-light</strong>">When to Consult an Expert for Help on How to Install a Ceiling Light

If you feel uncomfortable handling the task or run into unexpected problems during installation, don’t hesitate to call an electrician at any point.

Once you have successfully installed your first light fixture, nothing prevents you from adding new and beautiful lighting assortments throughout the house.

[6
["post-22339","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home-improvement
["GET
