The problem? You’re likely getting different recommendations from each website and each friend because every baby is unique.

There are various useful products and items you can buy for your newborn baby, making it hard to choose what is best or most necessary.

“There are so many things you are told you need as new parents,” says Nicola Richardson, founder of The Frugal Cottage. “But, honestly, you don’t need half of what is out there.”

If you’re on a budget or want to stick to the basics, here is a list of must-have items from financial professionals who have been through the early stages of parenting first-hand.

Related content

How to Budget for Your First Baby

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="<strong>what-newborn-baby-essentials-do-you-need?</strong>">What Newborn Baby Essentials Do You Need?

We asked five experts what they thought were essential need-to-haves, and got to know their favourite or most-used items in year one as a new parent.

Baby Gear and Transportation

Possibly the most important and most costly category of newborn essentials is baby gear and transportation. Newborn essentials you cannot go without are a safe place for your baby to sleep, a stroller and car seat, a baby carrier and a baby bathtub.

Richardson says as far as sleep options go, it doesn’t matter if it’s a Moses basket or a next-to-you-crib; the bottom line is having somewhere that they can rest and be safe.

Although it can be tempting to buy a designer stroller and car seat, many affordable options combine both items for a more reasonable price. Every car seat and stroller has to pass the same standardized safety test, meaning the brand is just another label at the end of the day.

Erica Sandberg, consumer finance reporter and author of Expecting Money: The Essential Financial Plan for New and Growing Families, also recommends a lightweight, inexpensive, easily packable stroller. “It will get banged up as you put it in and take it out of your car, so it shouldn’t be precious.”

As far as a baby carrier, Janine Rogan, founder of The Wealth Building Academy, says this was her most-used product. She uses hers around the house and on walks throughout the neighbourhood. “He also loves napping in the carrier, so it’s a win-win for everyone as my hands are free when I’m wearing the baby,” says Rogan.

Lastly, a baby bath is another newborn essential you should have on hand. Keisha Blair, the author of Holistic Wealth: 32 Life Lessons To Help You Find Purpose, Prosperity and Happiness, says she still has fond memories of bath times with her kids and how relaxing they can be for babies when done right. She also says they are a precursor to a good night’s sleep or daytime nap. The same goes for a good sound machine that can play white noise to calm a baby down.

What do you need?

Crib or bassinet

Stroller

Car seat

A baby carrier

Baby bath

Sound machine

Feeding Essentials

Although it’s good to plan ahead, a breast pump can be an expensive item to purchase before knowing whether or not you’ll need one. Instead, wait to see whether you’ll feed your newborn formula, or breastfeed.

If you’d like to be prepared without going over budget and hope to breastfeed your baby, Rogan says an affordable item to have is the Haakaa. The Haakaa is a manual silicone breast pump that catches any let-downs while breastfeeding.

Aside from how you feed your child, another fantastic item to have that can help the experience of bottle or breastfeeding is a nursing pillow. A basic pillow can make holding your baby more comfortable for both you and them.

Richardson also suggests buying some bottles and a sterilizer. When it comes to these newborn essentials, she encourages new parents to focus on buying items that cater to their individual needs. You will slowly learn what these individual needs are, such as the swaddles they like best, or the bottles that are more suitable for your child.

There are many brands of baby bottles that exist, but a great place to start is by purchasing a “starter pack” that contains different size nipples and includes all of the essential cleaning tools you need.

What do you need?

Bottles and accessories

A manual or electronic breast pump (if breastfeeding)

A nursing pillow

Diapering Essentials

One of the most obvious newborn essentials is diapers. Your baby will inevitably need something before they start to potty train, which can be anywhere from the first two to three years of their life.

If you plan to go the reusable diaper route, Sandberg says that a diaper delivery service can be an amazing way to avoid dealing with a mess if you can afford to.

If you plan to go the disposable route, we have a great breakdown of the cost of diapers and how many you can expect to buy in year one.

Keep in mind that you will also need a diaper pail to dispose of dirty diapers, as well as the accessories that go with changing diapers, such as wipes and diaper cream. Jasmine Tillery, the creator of Money & Momming, says that her most used item was a diaper caddy that kept all of its essentials. Tillery says the diaper caddy makes it easier to have all of the items in one place without setting up a full station on each floor.

What do you need?

Diapers

Baby wipes

Diaper cream

Diaper pail

Diaper caddy

Clothing

It can be tempting to buy those cute outfits you spot during online shopping when it comes to clothing. Although there is nothing wrong with these purchases if they make you happy, you should also consider the price versus how much use you’ll get out of each item.

Sandberg says not to underestimate the number of onesies your baby will go through. “They will spit up, you’ll drip milk on them, and even the best diapers leak,” says Sandberg. But, she also recommends that you are money-savvy when purchasing these items. Besides buying second-hand clothing or borrowing from friends and family, Sandberg suggests buying bulk packs of onesies for year one to cut costs.

Baby swaddles are also a great newborn essential, but one item recommended by most of our experts was sleepsacks. A sleep sack is a wearable blanket that replaces loose blankets, keeps babies warm, and helps them sleep sounder.

What do you need?

Onesies

Pyjamas

Sleepsacks

Health and Safety

Given the past year, health is often top of mind. This can be especially true when considering the safety of your newborn. From a thermometer to a snot sucker, there are a few basics you can buy for peace of mind without going over budget.

Most popular health brands, such as Safety 1st and Fridababy, have general kits that include all of the items you’ll need to make sure your baby is well taken care of and safe. From nail clippers to a newborn nasal aspirator, you should be covered.

What do you need?

A grooming kit

A healthcare kit

Having a baby can be expensive, especially when you consider the long list of newborn essentials you’ll have to purchase. But, keep in mind, you don’t need to buy everything at once or before your baby arrives. Do what you can to make sure you feel prepared and comfortable to welcome your newest family member and make the experience enjoyable and stress-free.

Related content

How Much Do Baby Diapers Cost in the First Year?

[3
["post-17484","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle
["GET
