This includes water used to cook pasta and rice, boil eggs and even clean your fruits and vegetables. Since boiling pasta and rice takes roughly four litres of water, you\u2019ll save that amount by reusing it or watering plants with it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-let-the-faucet-run-while-cleaning-food\"><strong>Don\u2019t Let the Faucet Run While Cleaning Food<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While cleaning your fruit and vegetables is important for hygiene, don\u2019t let the faucet run while cleaning them. The average faucet flows at about <a href=\"https:\/\/okanaganfallsirrigationdistrict.ca\/conservation-tips\">eight litres of water per minute.<\/a> Similarly, avoid running water to thaw food and defrost it in the refrigerator instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-compost-to-limit-garbage-disposal-use\"><strong>Compost to Limit Garbage Disposal Use<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Composting is a great way to limit running your garbage disposal. Try the following ways to save water when cleaning and bathing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turn-off-the-water-after-you-wet-your-toothbrush\"><strong>Turn Off the Water After You Wet Your Toothbrush<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning off the water while brushing your teeth can save <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groundwatercanada.com\/100-ways-to-conserve-water-3664\/\">95 litres a month.<\/a> Also, be mindful of turning off the water when washing your face or shaving.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-check-your-toilets-faucets-and-pipes-for-leaks\"><strong>Check Your Toilets, Faucets and Pipes for Leaks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fixing leaky faucets can save <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groundwatercanada.com\/100-ways-to-conserve-water-3664\/\">530 litres a week.<\/a> One way to test if your toilet leaks is to put a few drops of food colouring into the toilet tank water. If, after 10 to 15 minutes, the colouring seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you leak. Fixing it can save up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groundwatercanada.com\/100-ways-to-conserve-water-3664\/\">3,785 litres a month.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-take-shorter-showers\"><strong>Take Shorter Showers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of Canada\u2019s domestic water use, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hgtv.ca\/cleaning-and-organization\/photos\/20-easy-ways-to-save-money-on-your-water-bill-1053139\/#currentSlide=1\">35%<\/a> goes toward bathing. You use about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hgtv.ca\/cleaning-and-organization\/photos\/20-easy-ways-to-save-money-on-your-water-bill-1053139\/#currentSlide=2\">10 litres<\/a> of water per minute by taking a shower, so shortening your shower by a minute or two will save up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groundwatercanada.com\/100-ways-to-conserve-water-3664\/\">568 litres per month<\/a>. If you\u2019re an avid bath taker, filling up your bathtub halfway uses about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hgtv.ca\/cleaning-and-organization\/photos\/20-easy-ways-to-save-money-on-your-water-bill-1053139\/#currentSlide=1\">200 litres <\/a>of water. Instead, treat yourself to one bath a week, filling up the tub one-quarter full to conserve water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-install-low-or-dual-flush-model-toilets\"><strong>Install Low- Or Dual-Flush Model Toilets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Toilet flushes consume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.directenergy.com\/learning-center\/save-water-at-home\">one-third<\/a> of household water, ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.directenergy.com\/learning-center\/save-water-at-home\">6 to 14 litres per flush.<\/a> If your toilet was installed before 1993, it probably uses almost <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.directenergy.com\/top-water-saving-fixtures-home\/\">8 litres more water<\/a> per flush than more modern toilets. Install low- or dual-flush model toilets to use far less water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-install-water-saving-showerheads\"><strong>Install Water-Saving Showerheads<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your shower fills a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groundwatercanada.com\/100-ways-to-conserve-water-3664\/\">4-litre bucket<\/a> in less than 20 seconds, you should consider replacing the showerhead with a water-efficient model. Machine washing uses around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norfolknaturalliving.com\/blogs\/journal\/is-hand-washing-your-clothes-better-than-using-the-washing-machine#:~:text=Well%2C%20let's%20compare%20numbers%3A,comes%20out%20a%20clear%20winner.\">53 litres<\/a> per wash, and when you don\u2019t run the water and put a stopper in the sink, hand washing uses only 20. Make sure to collect the items you need to wash so you can do one batch together. Limiting the amount of detergent you use is also a good idea. A little bit will go a long way, and fewer suds means less need for rinse water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-concentrated-detergents\"><strong>Use Concentrated Detergents<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Concentrated detergents save water, as manufacturers avoid the expense of adding water to the bottle. Non-concentrated liquid laundry detergents contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/money\/business\/2014\/05\/13\/purex-laundry-detergent-cut-water-content-percent\/9049081\/\">60% to 90% <\/a>water, so choosing a concentrated detergent can save you hundreds of litres of water a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-wash-after-one-use\"><strong>Don\u2019t Wash After One Use<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all laundry needs washing after one use. Bath and hand towels, jeans and pyjamas can go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleaninginstitute.org\/cleaning-tips\/clothes\/laundry-basics\/do-i-need-wash\">three or more uses<\/a> before washing. Due to the size of towels, wait to wash them to help you save one to two full loads a week (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whirlpool.ca\/en_ca\/blog\/washers-and-dryers\/he-washing-machine-water-usage.html\">49 to 87 litres<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-upgrade-to-an-efficient-washing-machine\"><strong>Upgrade to an Efficient Washing Machine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>New <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/energy-efficiency\/energy-efficiency-products\/product-information\/appliances-residential-use\/clothes-washers\/13984\">ENERGY STAR-certified models<\/a> use less energy overall and half as much water than ENERGY STAR-certified washers made before January 1, 2007.
