{"id":12116,"date":"2019-10-21T08:00:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T12:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zolo.ca\/news\/?p=12116"},"modified":"2022-07-19T22:58:28","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T02:58:28","slug":"wellness-driver-career-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zolo.ca\/blog\/wellness-driver-career-success","title":{"rendered":"Wellness Is Key Driver in Career Success, Says Ubc Psychology Professor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half of Realtors\u00ae love the independence their chosen career provides, according to a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zolo.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zolo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> survey that measured the career success and challenges of the real estate profession.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zolo Realtor Survey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was developed to determine why people choose real estate as a profession and to examine the challenges faced when building a real estate career.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA career in real estate offers a work environment and diversity of opportunity that attracts all types of people,\u201d says Zolo President, Mustafa Abbasi. \u201cTo help each individual to succeed in this chosen profession, we wanted to identify the largest obstacles and biggest motivations. This way, we can create programs and tools to help our agents succeed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"benefits-of-a-real-estate-career\">Benefits of a Real Estate Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zolo.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bigstock-Mom-with-her-two-children-sitt-257733751-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"buy house sight unseen\" class=\"wp-image-11878\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zolo Realtor Survey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 41% of Realtors ranked independence as the \u201cbest part\u201d of their profession\u2014with 34% of these respondents aged 50 or older and 29% between age 40 and 49.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To offer insights into the findings, Zolo consulted with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelownapsychologists.com\/our-professionals\/dr-michael-woodworth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Michael Woodworth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus and a clinical psychologist.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Woodworth confirmed that in today\u2019s rapidly shifting job market, having more freedom and flexibility can lead to unlimited potential for the right type of motivated individual.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings support prior research in the areas of workplace motivation and success. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/heapro\/article\/28\/2\/166\/661129\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the academic journal, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Promotion International<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, job autonomy is essential to job satisfaction. Autonomy and independence are terms to describe how much a person believes they can direct and control their own choices and actions. \u201cThe degree of independence can have a dramatic impact on a person\u2019s job satisfaction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, independence was not the only factor that was important for job satisfaction.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s remarkable how many workers are increasingly looking for a job where there is a greater sense of purpose and the potential for personal fulfilment by both helping and connecting with others,\u201d explained Dr. Woodworth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprisingly, the second \u201cbest part\u201d of being a Realtor, according to results from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zolo Realtor Survey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was the ability to help others (38%); only 13% of the respondents saw the potential for financial success as the \u201cbest part.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Woodworth observed, growing numbers of employees appear to be measuring their success in more ways than just financial achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"attractive-aspects-of-real-estate\">Attractive Aspects of Real Estate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zolo.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/bigstock-Business-career-and-placement-244175239-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Business, career and placement concept   two business partners i\" class=\"wp-image-11561\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help assess what motivates and inspires Realtors to pursue and succeed in a career in real estate, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zolo Realtor Survey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> measured the most important goals as identified by agents ranging in age from 18 to 65.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four primary goals identified were, as follows:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34% believed that a real estate career offered the ability to <\/span><b>earn a good living<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and earn money)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21% highlighted the <\/span><b>ability to succeed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an attractive aspect of this career path<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12% appreciated the ability to put <\/span><b>family first<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as a professional working in the real estate industry<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% were enthusiastic with the career for allowing them to <\/span><b>take care of their health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their family\u2019s health.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps this is why 44% of agents, when asked what other careers they would choose, opted to continue being a Realtor. Other potential career selections included: entrepreneur (9%); a creative job, such as an actor (8%) and a designer (4%).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"challenges-of-real-estate-as-a-career\">Challenges of Real Estate as a Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zolo.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/bigstock-220990543-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"man-searching-for-new-home-online\" class=\"wp-image-11372\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also found that real estate agents faced several identifiable common problems in their profession. In particular, 24% struggled with time management, while 20 % found that growing their business is the biggest challenge. Balancing work-life balance is a challenge for 12% of Realtors, while 11% struggle to deal with health issues while trying to achieve career success.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRealtors face many of the same challenges as other occupations but must do so often while having to perform under highly intense and irregular markets,\u201d explains Dr. Woodworth. \u201cThen they must add to this the demand to consistently maintain an<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upbeat and positive attitude\u2014regardless of how they are feeling that day\u2014while supporting individuals through one of the most emotional and expensive transactions of their whole life.\u201d<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his practice, Dr. Woodworth sees first-hand, the need for proper self-care and work environments that genuinely support emotional wellness and balance in an employee\u2019s life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWorkplaces that support their employees by creating an environment of trust and communication will be the ones that really have the potential to thrive,\u201d says Dr. Woodworth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out survey respondents did identify the benefits of help. More than half (59%) wanted to work with a coach to help them overcome the biggest obstacles to their career growth and the achievement of their personal values.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support holistic wellness, Zolo invited Dr. Michael Woodworth to present an educational seminar on self-care strategies to \u201ccreate a more successful you within your work, home and community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This special two-hour event will take place at the Zolo Gastown Office at #1031-88 West Pender Street in Vancouver, B.C., on Friday, October 25, 2019, starting at 11:11 a.m. PST.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This seminar will illustrate the science behind the need for self-care and discuss the tools top producers need to avoid burnout and stay ahead of the competition.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This limited-seating wellness seminar will be catered and is free to agents or partners of Zolo (who RSVP) with a limited number of tickets open to members of the public. For more information, please email bel@zolo.ca.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data used to determine these results came from the findings of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zolo Realtor Survey 2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an online survey conducted between July and August 2019. The survey asked more than 100 Realtors in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia a series of long-form questions to identify obstacles, challenges and successes in their careers.
