Best self-pick and pumpkin patches in Ontario in 2019

Beautiful pumpkin field in Germany Europe. Halloween pumpkins on farm. Pumpkin patch on a sunny autumn morning during Thanksgiving time. Organic vegetable farming. Harvest season in October.

Tis’ the season for one-too-many pumpkin spice lattes and ten-too-many Halloween candies. If there’s one consolation as shorter evenings give way to crisp autumn mornings, it’s that fall harvest season has arrived. If you’re looking for pumpkin patches in Ontario – you can look no further.

Pumpkin picking season is here — and Canadians love their pumpkins. So much so, that according to the 2016 Census of Agriculture, there are an estimated 2,569 farms with pumpkin patches across Canada. This includes many self-pick pumpkin patches in Ontario.

For those who don’t gorge on gourds, there are a number of other fruits, vegetables and legumes ready to be plucked from the harvest.

“The cool thing about going to a farm is that you can often find varieties that are not in grocery stores,” says Cathy Bartolic, the executive director of the Ontario Farm Fresh Marketing Association.

Newer varieties, such as Silken apples, don’t yet have great enough yields for grocery stores, making farms the only place to buy them.

If picking produce isn’t your bag, Bartolic says many farms offer family-friendly activities on-site, such as wagon rides and corn mazes.

“It’s great just to get out in the fresh air, to catch those last few rays until winter kicks in.”
